Between the City Walls of Cluj with Ionuț Julean
Cluj has always been a city of contrasts. Known as the “treasure city” or “city of treasures” (kincses Kolozsvár), it has witnessed multiple urban transformations, evolving spectacularly from a small fortified perimeter around the first parish church to an urban complex of about 45 ha, provided with impressive fortifications, with 20 towers. Churches, houses, palaces and institutional headquarters evoke the transformations from a merchant city to a city of the nobles, bourgeoisie and elites, and then to an academic city. Step by step we discover buildings, some proper architectural treasures, others that hide unsuspected stories… and thus local history unfolds concentrated, century after century, within a relatively narrow perimeter. For those who are in the city for the first time, we propose a short journey, checking buildings, urban spaces, evoking historical episodes or the figures of local personalities, which complete the architectural flavor of an autumn afternoon in Cluj. It also aims to open debates among professionals in the field, curious individuals, and admirers of architecture.
